(1 diggs) Why are three of this year's Hugo nominees about the decline of America? [Hugo Awards] io9 Blogger Paul Kincaid compares three of this year's five Hugo finalists, and discovers a theme: They're all about the decline of the United States of America. What causes the U.S. to fall from power in these books? Spoilers ahead.
When I set out to blog this year's Hugo shortlisted novels, I imagined something conventional like a separate post on each book. For the first two books I was able to stick to that modest ambition, but the next three I read set off such resonances and cross-currents...

(1 diggs) Young Adult Literature: Ship Breaker - A Novel by Paolo Bacigalupi | FrogenYozurt.Com - Literature & Entertainment frogenyozurt This YA debut by Bacigalupi, a rising star in adult science fiction, presents a dystopian future like so many YA sf novels. Curious fans ready to devour 'The Hunger Games' movie

"Dystopia" is the opposite of "utopia," the word that Renaissance philosopher Sir Thomas More used to describe a perfect society.

After the Soviets and the Nazis tried – and failed – to create such a society, a whole school of "dystopian" literature arose, pointing out the danger – not to mention the horror – of curtailing human freedom in the name of progress. "We" (1921) by Yevgeny Zamyatin, "Brave New World" (1931) by Aldous Huxley, "Nineteen Eighty-Four" (1948) by George Orwell and "A Clockwork Orange" (1962) by Anthony Burgess are among the books that served as models for "The Hunger Games," and other morose futuristic lit for teens. Here are some titles:

"Uglies," by Scott Westerfeld, 2005. Teenage Tally Youngblood rebels against a world where teens are turned "pretty" by compulsory cosmetic surgery. "The Maze Runner," by James Dashner, 2009. Teenage Thomas arrives at The Glade, a dystopia surrounded by a massive wall – beyond which

Nori's Closet: Ship Breaker by Paolo Bacigalupi

This book won the 2011 Michael L Printz Award. If you don’t know what that is, it’s pretty much the biggest award that can be given to a Young Adult book. I also read a lot of book reviews. And pretty much everywhere I turn, this book is praised. It even had good customer reviews on Amazon. The only negative thing I found at all was from a customer on Amazon, who said this might be more of an adult book than a YA book because the issues were so dark. Clearly, this customer is not familiar with The Hunger Games , or much of any dystopias, or the fact which is thrown at you (in BOLD lettering) at library school that kids/teens thrive on tough issues. Tough issues get reluctant readers...
