Solving the paddle puzzle

Kayaking is one of the fastest growing outdoor activities in the country — and it's easy to see why.
Trying one out is just a rental or a guided trip away, and you can get your feet wet with the purchase of a kayak and accompanying gear for less than $500 — or several times that depending on tastes and needs.
Kayaks can open doors to adventures ranging from touring, fishing, waterfowl hunting, birding and camping in otherwise inaccessible areas to adrenalin-pumping whitewater rapids.
Plus, paddling almost silently and low on the water allows for immersion in one's surroundings and a closer observation and appreciation of nature.
So what's the best kayak? That depends — and there's a model designed for just about anything.
“When I speak to a person who wants to purchase a kayak, I ask him or her what they want to do with this vessel — fishing, cruising, floating down the river, running rapids, paddling offshore or touring for 20 miles or more — and dial them in,” said Culley Traweek , Texas sales representative for Hobie Cat Co.
