(1 diggs) Emerging drug class may enhance red blood cell production in anemic patients bharan Anemia occurs due to a breakdown in erythropoiesis, the multi-step process that creates red blood cells. Some common anemias can be treated with a recombinant form of the hormone erythropoietin (EPO), which normally stimulates red blood-cell production at a fairly early stage of erythropoiesis. However, certain anemias fail to respond to EPO, creating a large unmet medical need. In the case of Diamond Blackfan anemia (DBA), patients lack a sufficient number of EPO-responsive cells. Instead,...

Fundraiser will support bone-marrow transplant for 5-year-old

As part of the annual April Fool’s pancake breakfast at Tremont Center on Saturday, businesses and residents will be helping out a serious cause — helping to fund a bone-marrow transplant for 5-year-old Fred Drew.

During the breakfast, Fred’s parents, Mark and Joanne Drew, will be handing out chocolate icing and ice cream for patrons’ pancakes. They will also be accepting donations that will go toward covering their son’s medical procedure, which is scheduled to be performed in Seattle in the coming weeks.

Mark Drew said his son was diagnosed with Diamond Blackfan Anemia (DBA), a rare bone marrow defect that makes Fred’s body unable to make red blood cells.

The city has also given permission for a block party to take place on Wickliffe Road following the pancake breakfast, where anyone interested in helping the family out can bid on silent auction items or make tax-deductible donations through the Children’s Organ Transplant Association (COTA).

Tim Tran, Alec Gazda-Tran & Dr. Hanna Gazda

One sunny April day in 1986, when I was an intern at the University Hospital in Warsaw, Poland, I was treating a teenage boy with a transfusion-dependent form of Diamond Blackfan Anemia (DBA), when he confronted me, asking why he was sick and why we were not able to cure him. It was a challenge I accepted, and the beginning of an odyssey that would stretch across two continents.

Ever since seeing this young man in the clinic, I have had a long standing and highly focused commitment to helping families with Diamond-Blackfan anemia.  My boss at that time, Professor Roma Rokicka-Milewska, helped me create the first Polish Diamond-Blackfan Anemia Registry allowing me to begin collecting DNA samples from children with DBA and their families. This provided an opportunity to amass a unique and comprehensive collection of clinical and genetic material from DBA patients in Poland. In the coming years, these samples would prove vital to uncovering the responsible genes, but in Warsaw, I didn’t have the training or support to begin with work. The more samples I collected, the more I wanted to devote more time to DBA research. I had some experience in research before, but it was always secondary to my duties as a practicing physician. Lacking the necessary training and resources in Warsaw, I applied for an NIH Fogarty International Fellowship and moved, with the collected DNA samples, from Warsaw to Boston in 1997 to extend my studies of DBA to molecular genetic analyses in the laboratory of Dr. Colin Sieff at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. At that time, we initiated a productive collaboration with a geneticist, Dr. Alan Beggs from Children’s Hospital Boston, to map and identify DBA genes. Under this arrangement, I received guidance and support from both Drs. Colin Sieff and Alan Beggs as well as from Dr. David Nathan, one of the leading hematologists of our time.
